Connecting Craft and Technology: Instrument Passport for Violins, Violas, and Cellos

This week in the Howery Violins workshop, I’ve been preparing for the Violin Society of America Convention (VSA 2025). Each small Visqueen envelope I’m assembling holds an Instrument Passport NFC tag, a business card, and a brochure that I’ll be sharing at the Demonstration Station during the event.

These tiny tags connect the physical craftsmanship of violins, violas, and cellos to their digital records—linking every instrument to its provenance, materials, and history. The smallest 5×5 mm tags even fit neatly on bows, allowing full traceability without affecting the look or sound of the instrument.

I’ll be demonstrating how Instrument Passport works right from a phone—no app, no setup—so luthiers and musicians can see how simple it is to protect their work and verify authenticity.

If you’re attending the convention, stop by and say hello! I’d love to talk about your experiences with instrument documentation, restoration, and sustainability.
